Another Crisis!

f0146342_15203219.jpg

I thought we just had a power outage at the beginning of the year. But another trouble was awaiting us, “water” this time. Water was leaking from a pipe right outside the house. It looked just like a small fountain of spring water. Casey, who was home on a holiday, found it and, oh boy, what a crazy day we had after that!

He called San Jose Water Company and plumbing companies for help. We waited impatiently for about two hours until they finally got here. It turned out the broken pipe from the meter to the house had to be replaced. Not only that, we had to do it at our own expense (o_o;). A temporary measure was taken that day, which was to secure water from the meter on the sidewalk to the house using a regular hose. So we didn’t have to tolerate the inconvenience of having no water but I wanted to cry, “Please, nobody touches the hose on the sidewalk!!”

“What on the earth will be the cost for the replacement?” Next day, Casey frantically gathered quotes from four plumbers, which amazingly ranged widely from $1,600 to $2,800. Then, I heard a door bell. It was our neighbor who worked for San Jose Water Company. Actually he was the first person we looked for when we found the leaking pipe but he was gone at that time. He saw the hose on the sidewalk and stopped by. It turned out he was a plumber working as an individual and offered us a far better quote than any of those we had got. “Wow, how lucky we are!”

Next day, late afternoon, he and his partner dug up a portion of the lawn, installed a new pipe and put the lawn back. Everything was done in two hours.
Hence, the end of the crisis we had no idea would end only in two days and with the minimum cost thanks to an unexpected development. Although it was still a big expense for us, I felt so grateful for being able to use water anytime we turned the faucet. Anyway, this year has already turning out far from being quiet and peaceful for us (^_^;).

Beginner of Deep-Frying

f0146342_1447328.jpg

Recently, I have been vigorously challenging deep-frying. It is embarrassing to say, but I had never done any kind of deep-frying before. This is a dangerous job that requires constant attention. There was no way I could even try it with my dancing princess and dragon boy around. On top of that, Jiji is an expert of deep-frying which made it unnecessary for me to do.

However, one of Casey’s favorite foods are spring rolls and dragon, who doesn’t eat a variety of food, likes deep-fried shrimps and chickens. Also stimulated by Chiezo, who made deep-fried pork for us last summer, I started to be interested in doing it myself. This may be a proof that my kids have grown up enough.

“OK I’m going to try while I have a helping hand of Babi.” Well, so much of the excitement. When I tried to do ready-to-fry croquettes, which was my very first try, I had my right hand terribly burned right away. I thought something was telling me that this was not something I should do and gave up once. But I had to add something new to my cooking repertoire which was not much anyway. Pulling myself together, I challenged again.

So far we have tried spring rolls, fried shrimps and fried chicken. It was a team play with Babi through trial and errors. Even though they are grown, princess and dragon still demand a great amount of attention for their own needs, never leaving me alone (princess’s requests are always expressed in the same noisy vocal sounds, though). Completely shutting myself out from those noises, I simply concentrated on frying. This may be a good mental training for me (^_^;).

Anyway, all of them tasted good despited their appearance and were well-received by my family. I think I can do it now. I feel good about it. Let’s see what I am going to deep-fry next.

It Goes On

f0146342_1513975.jpg

My dragon boy’s birthday. As a matter of fact, it was not over yet. It came to a climax when we invited Grandma and his uncle and aunt from Stockton during the weekend. It was a BBQ birthday party. Grandma was also a February born, so we celebrated together.

When we tried to take a picture of all of us, I realized this family would never be able to take a nice picture, a kind of picture with everybody lined up and smiling nicely. It was funny that my sister-in-law had the same impression when she saw this photo (^_^;). The birthday cake was a “Pirates of the Caribbean” version. It was our first time to order a character cake ever. The colors of the cake were very pirate-like and our lips turned black. But it tasted much better than we thought.

Celebrated by everybody, dragon had a great start as a nine year old. I wonder if he would grow up a little until he turns 10 next year....

The Morning He Turned Nine

f0146342_2501840.jpg

My dragon boy turned nine years old!! In the morning of February 15 in 1999, he was born in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo. Time difference between Japan and California is 17 hours, which means in Japan the 15th starts at 7 a.m. of the 14th here in California and it will be 41 hours when the 15th ends here. That’s a long birthday! Dragon said a strange thing, “If I have a birthday twice a year, I’m 18 years old now!!”

Photos above are our every morning scene, commuting to school. This bike (we call it “mom’s bike” in Japan) is the one we bought when we moved from California to Meguro-ku, Tokyo exactly four years ago. We had a child seat attached on the back then. I still clearly remember how scared I was when I first rode it with dragon (five years old then). “How can other moms ride a bike with two or three kids on it??” It was a kind of culture shock to me. But after all I got to used to it right away.

After school, he played with one of his closest friends at “Jungles,” an indoor play facility (photos below). This is once a year treat for them. He was also excited with a present from Amy-san’s daughter, a precious reader of this blog. At night we had a small celebration at home. It was a good birthday.

Sea Animals

f0146342_3311825.jpg

In origami class, we made sea animals with the group we had worked with until this week. We made whales, penguins, seals, sea turtles and sea otters. By no chance these animals will get together in one place, but this is a world of origami. Even the whale can jump up so high. Among other projects were Valentine hearts and paper airplanes. Boys were so overjoyed to fly them.

As a matter of fact, we have a long, long waiting list for this class. Amazingly so many students want to learn origami. We teach a group of eight students (4th & 5th graders) every Tuesday for about 30 minutes during lunch recess. Our principal organizes the groups for us and we work with one group for five classes. I am not sure if we will be able to teach all the kids who want to come by the end of the school year....This is a cry out of joy.

Right now I am trying to decide what we are going to make with the next group. Usually I look up origami books from the library or go through origami websites on the internet to borrow ideas. I have to be careful since some projects look easy but are actually hard to make. I never know until I try to do it by myself. I wish I had some creativity to make something on my own (^_^;).

Doing origami class is so much fun. I wish that we could reach out to as many kids as possible and that they have a good time which turns into a long lasting happy memory.

3) History of Injuries (Part 3)

I have rambled on and on about our injuries. What made me look back at the past? Yes, there was a reason. A reason that, believe it or not, a new page has been added to the history!!(^_^;)

After letting 2007 go when we amazingly had no injuries, we just hoped for another good year at the beginning of 2008. However, the incident happened, this time very quietly. There was no upheaval or no rushing to the ER. It wasn’t dramatic at all.

One day, my dragon boy came up and pointed his toe to let me know he had a pain. Surely the second toe in his right foot was swollen. It was a daily event that he would run around in the house barefoot and have his toes smashed against a piece of furniture or walls. I figured the bump came from all those smashings and decided to keep an eye on it. He attended his Kung Fu class as usual with the toe wrapped up with bandages. A week passed but no change. It was time to go back to the same orthopedist. Dragon, who thought they might cut his toe, insisted that the pain was gone. There was no way of escaping, of course.

The doctor welcomed us nonchalantly, “There you are. Good to see you again. What brought you here today?” (^_^;) This time we had no way of explaining what exactly happened. Dragon said, “I got run over by... by a vacuum cleaner.” (Our vacuum is actually very tiny.) The doctor seemed to have given up a hope of finding out what had happened and examined his toe. His diagnosis was, “Most likely his toe is broken.” According to the doctor, there was no treatment for toes and all we could do was to let it heal on its own. Considering more than two weeks had probably passed since it was broken, the bone must have already been partially healed.

He said there was no need for an X-ray but that it was up to us to take it just to make sure. Scared of a bill which would come afterward, we decided to go for it since it was the toe of the fast-growing boy. The result came as no surprise, broken. Good thing was that dragon could continue to take Kung Fu class. I just paid the yearly tuition ahead of time last November. As a matter of fact when I was paying I was praying that he wouldn’t break any bone (^_^;).

What will happen next to whom? Will the history ever end?? I don’t know...(End)

*There is no picture of his broken toe. He firmly turned down my request to let me take a picture of it.

2) History of Injuries (Part 2)

After the two incidents of a broken bone at the age of three, things had been relatively quiet with my dragon boy. But this does not mean there was no accident at all. It happened when we were in Tokyo. In an empty lot across from the preschool, dragon fell down with a steel pipe which ended up on his neck! Horrified to see his bleeding nose, I took him to the nearby hospital right away. We even had his brain checked on a CT scan. Fortunately, his neck and head were fine. I remember he was five years old then.

Soon after coming back to California, it happened again. It was October 2005 and he was six years old. While playing at school, he jumped from a high play structure and hurt his ankle. As soon as I received the phone call from school, I ran there and saw his right ankle swollen. With the memories of the past incidents coming back, I was sure it was broken. For the first time in four yeas we were back at the familiar orthopedics. Fortunately again, it was not a serious damage enough to show in the X-ray. He only wore a robot-like boot for about a week and was completely all right afterward. But what really hurt us was the cost for the boot which our insurance didn’t cover at all.

Dragon is not the only one who gets injured. It was Casey’s turn now. In January 2006, we were enjoying a skateboard ride in a park. Right after a storm, twigs and pebbles were scattered all over. The skateboard stopped abruptly hitting one of the pebbles and he fell down and broke his right elbow. Following dragon’s suit, he ended up going to the same ER and later to the same orthopedics.

Fortunately, it wasn’t so serious and there was no need for a cast. But to prove what is usually said, it took Casey, 40 some years old, longer to heal than young dragon. Pain persisted for quite a while. The park was the same park where dragon broke his at the monkey bars. Since then we have been calling the park “Bone Breaking Park.” (^_^;)

We should not forget about my dancing princess. Being princess doesn’t allow her to be free from injuries. It was September 2006 when she suddenly started crying in a park. Then her lower lip started swelling in no time. “A bee sting!” we thought. She looked so miserable when the lip had swollen about an inch. To the ER again. While waiting, however, the swelling went down and the doctor said there was nothing to worry about.

I don’t know why but accidents happen one after another. It was two months later when three of us went to a library. It was nice of dragon to push princess in the wheelchair but he pushed too hard. He ran so fast that he lost control and couldn’t turn, knocking down the wheelchair to the side. Princess’s face got smashed on the ground very hard. Helped by a few people who happened to be there, we put princess who was crying very hard back in the van and headed home. She had a small cut in her mouth and her right eyelid was swollen red. But fortunately that was all. Among all the accidents we had had, I think this one was the most shocking to me. (to be continued)

1) History of Injuries (Part 1)

f0146342_4471423.jpg

Looking back, we have repeatedly been to ER and orthopedics since my dragon boy broke his bone for the first time. It was May 2001. How could I forget? Dragon, three years old then, was jumping off the chest drawers with the height of about five feet and slipped down on the floor. We ran to the ER nearby and found out his right elbow was broken. Given the first-aid treatment there, we took him to an orthopedics referred by them next day. Dragon had his arm in the cast for about a month, as far as I remember.

The elbow fully healed to our relief. However, it was not even six months before he broke his same elbow again. He had just learned to do monkey bars and wanted to show Daddy. The moment he grabbed the first bar, he fell down. We went to the ER right away but the doctor didn’t find anything serious that day. Next morning dragon was playing as if nothing had happened but we noticed he wasn’t using his right arm at all. His right elbow was swollen and we were back in the ER next moment.

We were dumbfounded to see the doctor on duty that day. It was the same doctor who took care of dragon six months before. Needless to say, the doctor was surprised to see us again (^_^;). While waiting at a bed surrounded by curtains, we could tell the doctor was looking at dragon’s X-rays outside the curtains. We heard him crying, “Oh my, Dragon, Dragon, you are one of the strongest boys I’ve ever seen!” That meant his elbow was broken again. We went back to the same orthopedics for treatment. (to be continued)

A Luxurious Day

f0146342_3541618.jpg

Gracefully lying down in soothing music and aroma. Having a whole-body massage for a good hour. What a luxury just to think about it! And this luxury came true! I was a bit nervous and far from being graceful but I was in total bliss.

For Christmas, Casey gave me the gift card for massage or aesthetic services at this fancy salon. Christmas, but not the one we just had. Christmas before that. It was so hard to squeeze out the time and I wasn’t courage enough to walk in such a fancy place. Then a year had passed when I realized it.

“I have to make it this year!” In the brochure, there was a variety of services to choose from. Taking massage treatments for example, they had Swedish style massage, pressure point massage, warm stone massage, even detoxifying treatment by wrapping the body with mud. I picked a Hawaiian massage called “Lomi-Lomi” this time. Chiezo once gave me the massage and I remember it was so good.

Casey and my dragon boy gave me a ride to the salon. After changing into a bathrobe, I waited in a dim room to be called by a therapist, a little nervous. Soon my name was called and I was dumbfounded next moment. My therapist was a Japanese woman. It turned out she had been assigned to me by chance and she said it had been only a couple of times a year that she would meet a Japanese this way. She was a young mom of two children and she worked only during weekends when her husband watched the kids.

This unexpected development somehow helped me relax and the massage was great, of course. I was totally absent for the rest of the day. I still have one more chance to go there. Next appointment is on my birthday in March. What if I become addicted???? (^_^;)

We often get forwarded emails from a few people telling jokes or giving some information. Among them, these photos from our next door neighbor were really shocking to me.
